Founded in 1979 by Howard E. “Rocky” Stone, the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is the nation’s leading organization representing consumers with hearing loss. HLAA exists to empower people with the tools, information, and community they need to live well—and to remind everyone that they do not have to face hearing loss alone.
The HLAA Dallas Chapter proudly relaunched in 2018 and is more active than ever as we move through 2025 and into 2026. As the local voice for people with hearing loss in the Dallas community, we continue the legacy of our early beginnings as Self Help for Hard of Hearing People (SHHH).
Our Mission
Our mission is simple: to open the world of communication to people with hearing loss by providing information, education, support, and advocacy throughout the Dallas area.
We offer education, resources, and a supportive community where people can connect, learn, and thrive—whether newly diagnosed or long-time members of the hearing loss community. As a unified chapter of the HLAA National Office, we work together to ensure every person has access to the knowledge and support they need.
Information & Education
Education is at the heart of what we do.
Our purpose is to raise awareness and deepen understanding of hearing loss among:
- individuals with hearing loss
- family and friends
- coworkers and employers
- teachers and schools
- hearing health care providers
- local businesses and government
- community organizations
HLAA Dallas provides adults and children with practical tools for self-help and fosters understanding of the nature, causes, challenges, and solutions related to hearing loss.
We share reliable information on:
- hearing aid technology and cochlear implants
- assistive listening devices
- captioning and communication access
- coping strategies and communication skills
- local resources and referrals
Our goal is to help you become an informed consumer—equipped to make the best decisions about your hearing health and communication needs.
Advocacy
HLAA Dallas is a strong voice for improving communication access for people with hearing loss.
Our advocacy efforts focus on local, grassroots action—where change often matters most. In fact, some of the most effective advocacy starts with you, the person with hearing loss.
We work to improve access in:
- workplaces
- schools and colleges
- hospitals and clinics
- government services and court systems
- hotels, entertainment venues, and public spaces
We promote new technology, support research, and encourage legislation that improves the lives of people with hearing loss. We also encourage self-advocacy—speaking up about your needs and letting others know how best to communicate with you.
Whether at work, school, social activities, or home, your voice helps make communication access stronger for everyone.
